Massacre in the mountain. Sectarian conflict in Mount Lebanon and Damascus kills thousands, most of them Maronite Christians. European intervention follows, and an autonomous Mount Lebanon district is created under Ottoman rule with international guarantee — the first ancestor of the modern state.
